Strange But True: Life of a Woman – EP 7

Three years into our marriage was like a life made in heaven. Yomi,(not real name) was like the best husband that anyone could ever ask for. He was sweet and devoted. He did just everything to make me happy.
Yomi’s life was plain and simple. If anyone asked me where my husband was at a point in time, I could easily state it and trust me, he would be there. occasionally, work took him out of Lagos but he would be on the phone with me for the better part of his time away. I didn’t know how I was so lucky to have such a man.
My mother had arranged for me and her to visit a pastor for prayers over my inability to have a child since I got married. I didn’t want to tell my husband about it cause I knew how he felt about seeking help from pastors. I didn’t even want to go but you all know how persuasive our mothers can be.
I didn’t know we were heading out of Lagos to Ibadan as she knew if she told me, I wouldn’t want to go. Although, I was upset that she should have told me so as we could pick another day; because my husband had travelled to Ibadan for business. My mother promised we would be quick.

We got to Ibadan, saw the pastor and we were on our way out of Ibadan when I asked my mother to at least let me eat the famous Amala, gbegiri and ewedu before leaving because I was very hungry. Then, we stopped at Mokola at a local BUKA. We were still coming out of the vehicle when I heard a strong cry of a little boy.
He seemed to have been running out of the canteen when he fell down. I rushed towards him and helped him up. His mother was in tow behind too. I checked the little boy and I realised he had hurt himself in the knee with little blood coming out.
He was still crying profusely. The mum kept saying, “I told him to stop, he wouldn’t listen. He just kept running.”
I told the mother to open the bottled water she was carrying and pour some on his wound to at least wash off the blood. We were still doing this when the mother of the boy said, “His dad should be out now. What else is he doing inside?”
As if like magic, all of us looked up towards the entrance of the canteen, coming out with two take away nylon bags was Yomi. He paused immediately looking shocked when he sighted all of us.

The woman shouted, “Oya Yomi now, bo si bi. Ka le tete ma lo.” (Yomi now, come here so that we can leave immediately). I was confused. I didn’t understand what was going on. My mother stepped aside and was watching the situation.
I realised Yomi married that woman in Ibadan and they both had that little boy who was two and a half years old. That means he had been with her since when he married me.
The question remained, why did he ever marry me? Why did he stay with me that I had not been able to give him a child. The woman wore a wedding band so obviously, they were legally joined just like we were.
He had asked for forgiveness. But I could move past that kind of deception. I couldn’t live with it. Neither could I find myself trusting every word that came out of him. I also kept asking myself how he was about to keep his secret perfectly well without me suspecting a thing?
I had to move on with my life and I have been happier since I did.
